The Project

b-active Women will offer women who are primary carers for children under the
age of 16, the opportunity to take part in sports such as swimming, athletics and
badminton. There will also be opportunities for women to take part in coach
education courses.

The b-active women project ran from August 2011 to December 2015 and aimed to 'offer women in Leicester communities and women who are the primary carers for children, under the age of 16, in Leiecster City the opportunity to take part in sport and tackle any barriers that they may face.'

The project will provided a ‘one stop sport shop’ for women who are interested in participating, coaching or volunteering within sport.

There were a number of partners involved in the running of the project, each with many years of experience delivering to the residents of Leicester City.

Partners involved in the running of the project were:

A number of activities were delivered through the project, including:

  • Badminton
  • Fitness i.e. Zumba, Circuits etc.
  • Cycling
  • Learn to Swim
  • Athletics

The project offered sessions in each of the individual sports, allowing women to participate in a specific sport that they are interested in.

As well as the sports specific sessions, they were also a number of other elements attached to the project; these being:

  • A coach education programme
  • Volunteering Opportunities
  • 1-2-1 Mentoring and support
  • Free childcare

One of the main focal points of the project is about tackling some of the barriers that women face that stops them from participating in sport. Through consultation and research, we identified the main barriers to be around cost and location. The project had a number of things in place to try and tackle these barriers, including offering free or low cost sessions and also delivering them in local facilities where possible.

The project was mainly funded through Sport England's 'Active Women' fund, with additional match funding and in kind contributions from project partners.
